The Life and Legacy of Yehuda Pen

Born in Zarasai, Lithuania, to a poor Jewish family, Yehuda Pen demonstrated an early talent for drawing and painting despite religious prohibitions against creating images. After working as a house painter in Dvinsk, Latvia, he moved to St. Petersburg to study at the Imperial Academy of Arts. He graduated with a silver medal, having been trained in the academic traditions of Realist art under teachers such as Pavel Chistyakov. Following his studies, he worked as a court painter for Baron Nikolai Korf in Kreitsburg before being invited to Vitebsk, where he spent the remainder of his life.

In 1897, Pen opened an art school in Vitebsk, primarily serving Jewish children, many of whom spoke only Yiddish. He often taught poor students for free and followed an academic approach. His school became a significant institution, teaching notable figures such as Marc Chagall, El Lissitzky, and Ossip Zadkine. Pen was a Realist painter who focused on depicting everyday Jewish life in the Pale of Settlement, including scenes of craftsmen, scholars, and religious or family life.

      Artistic Works and Final Years

Pen's repertoire includes various depictions of the inhabitants of Vitebsk. His documented works include:

During the 1920s and 1930s, Pen participated in exhibitions in Minsk and Moscow. His work occasionally took on a Soviet veneer, such as in A Komsomol Shoemaker Reading a Newspaper (1925). Pen lived in a two-room apartment in Vitebsk, which served as both his workshop and his home. He was murdered in his home in 1937; while officially attributed to robbery, his students believed he was killed by the NKVD during the Stalin purges. Many of his estimated 800 paintings were lost during World War II, with surviving works held in the National Art Museum in Minsk and the Vitebsk Regional Museum of Local History.
