Beschrijving verzamelobject

A Baltimore based artist, Barry Johnston earned a B.S in architecture from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1969. Following his graduation, Johnston then studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the National Academy of Design and the Enzo Cardini and Romanelli Studios in Florence. Johnston subjects draw from themes in religion, literature, and contemporary issues. He is known for capturing the figure in motion with strong movement of the hands, legs and feet, to express emotion and meaning. His love of Shakespeare led him to create King Lear. King Lear, a life-size bronze, captures the anguish and frailty of an old man, but also the power and majesty of a king. It was the first work of his “Shakespeare Series”. As stated on Johnston’s website, “In his madness, King Lear staggers through a raging storm, his cape flying wildly in the wind, capturing the moment when, having rejected his loving daughter Cornelia, he tragically realizes the consequences of his foolish alliance with his conniving older daughters.” To Johnston, ‘Lear’, “…represents the errors of misplaced loyalties”, reflecting some experiences he faced in Washington politics during that time. In these struggles and the negative pressures he had faced, he realized that some part of him had become “deranged”.

Charles Barry Johnston: A Voice for History and Imagination

Charles Barry Johnston, born April 17, 1949, in Paddington, England, is a multifaceted artist whose career spans writing, audiobook production, radio broadcasting, and songwriting—a testament to his lifelong passion for storytelling and creative expression. His artistic journey began amidst the vibrant musical landscape of the British vocal group Design in the 1970s, shaping his sensibilities and informing his distinctive literary style. This formative experience instilled a deep appreciation for narrative structure and emotional resonance, qualities that permeate his subsequent endeavors.

Early Life & Musical Roots

Johnston’s father, Brian Johnston, was a celebrated BBC cricket commentator, providing him with an early exposure to performance and public speaking—skills he would later hone as a radio presenter on stations in California and the UK. These influences fostered a keen understanding of communication and captivated his imagination. He joined Design, achieving considerable success in the music industry, demonstrating versatility and adaptability. This period solidified his belief that artistic pursuits could enrich one's life beyond measure.

Radio Broadcasting & Audiobook Production: Crafting Soundscapes

Johnston’s radio career extended across continents, showcasing his talent for engaging audiences with diverse topics—music and sports being particular favorites. However, it was his foray into audiobook production that truly cemented his reputation as a storyteller. Collaborating with renowned authors and narrators, he meticulously edited and crafted compelling narratives, mastering the art of conveying emotion through voice and sound. His work on biographies, notably Kenneth Horne and his father Brian Johnston, exemplifies this dedication to detail and authenticity—a hallmark of his artistic approach.

Exploring Artistic Style & Inspiration

Johnston’s artistic style is characterized by a harmonious blend of musical intuition and literary precision. Like a composer arranging notes, he carefully considers pacing, tone, and imagery to create immersive experiences for listeners. His inspiration draws from a rich tapestry of sources—family memories, personal observations, and historical accounts—feeding his creativity and informing his thematic concerns. He seeks to capture the essence of human experience with sensitivity and nuance, mirroring the profound impact of music on his artistic vision.

Notable Artwork & Recognition
