Born in Manchester, England, Holden’s formative years were marked by an early fascination with agriculture and veterinary science—a grounding that would subtly inform his artistic sensibilities. His education at Wilmslow Modern School followed by Reaseheath School provided him with both intellectual stimulation and practical experience, shaping his worldview before he embarked on a pivotal encounter with David Bomberg at the City Literary Institute in 1944. This meeting proved transformative, sparking a collaborative spirit that would blossom into the formation of the Borough Group alongside fellow students of Bomberg at Borough Polytechnic.
