The Life and Artistic Evolution of William Rose Born in Carrington, New South Wales, William Rose began his professional life working at sea and in the factories of the industrial city of Newcastle. After studying art at the Newcastle Technical College, where he first exhibited his work in 1954, he moved to Sydney to continue his education at the East Sydney Technical College and the Julian Ashton Art School. During his time in Sydney, he became associated with artists of the Abstract Expressionism movement and participated in the 1956 Direction 1 exhibition at the Macquarie Galleries. While his work was part of this influential group, Rose identified himself as a Constructivist.
