Doménikos Theotokópoulos, known to the world as El Greco – “the Greek” – was a painter whose life and work defied easy categorization. Born in Crete, Greece (1541), his artistic journey took him through Venice and Rome before finding its ultimate expression in the spiritual heartland of Spain: Toledo.
