Figure (Paul Scheurich, 1924) Canvasprint, getrouw aan het licht van het origineel

The Grace of Form and Light

In this 1924 porcelain work, we find a quiet dialogue between the human silhouette and the natural world. The figure, rendered in glazed porcelain, captures a woman in a moment of gentle interaction with a bird. There is a certain stillness here, a pause in motion that feels both intentional and effortless. The composition draws the eye upward, following the verticality of the woman's form as she holds the bird aloft. Her drapery flows in organic, liquid lines, suggesting a sense of movement even in the stillness of the ceramic. The high-gloss glaze catches the light, creating sharp highlights and deep shadows that define the musculature and the soft folds of her attire. It is a study in how light can transform a solid object into something that feels almost ethereal.

Materiality and Craft

The technical execution of this piece reveals the artist's profound understanding of medium and volume. By working with glazed porcelain, the creator achieves a surface that is both smooth and reflective, allowing the play of light to dictate the viewer's perception of depth. The sculptural quality is emphasized by the following elements:

• The interplay of chiaroscuro effects created by directional lighting.
• The fluid, rounded shapes that define the anatomical structure.
• The contrast between the verticality of the figure and the horizontal counterpoint of the bird.
• The monochromatic palette that focuses attention entirely on form and texture.

This approach avoids the distraction of color, choosing instead to rely on the subtle gradations of grey and white to communicate the subject's presence. The result is a work that feels monumental despite its intimate scale.

A Legacy of Design

Paul Scheurich, born in New York City, United States, brought a unique perspective to the European ceramic tradition. His ability to move between the precision of porcelain modeling and the grander scale of theatrical design is evident in the way this figure occupies space. The work reflects a period of significant experimentation in ceramic design, where the boundaries between fine art and decorative craft were constantly being explored. There is a theatricality in the drapery and the pose, perhaps a subtle nod to his work in stage and costume design, which lends the figure a sense of dramatic poise. It is a piece that speaks to the intersection of classical grace and the modern sensibilities of the early twentieth century.
