Giuseppe De Nittis: Bridging Salon Art and Impressionism
Giuseppe De Nittis (Barletta, 25 februari 1846 - Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 12 augustus 1884) was een Italiaanse kunstschilder. Hij wordt gerekend tot het impressionisme. Zijn werk mengt de stijl van Salon kunst en Impressionisme, waardoor hij een belangrijke figuur werd in de ontwikkeling van zowel Italiaanse als Europese kunst aan het einde van de 19e eeuw.- Geboren en Jeugd
- De Nittis werd geboren in Barletta, gelegen aan de Adriatische kust, waar hij woonde met zijn familie in het meest welvarende deel van de stad nabij het kruispunt van Corso Vittorio Emanuele en Corso Garibaldi, vlakbij de geboorteplaats van een andere bekende kunstenaar en tijdgenoot, Geremia Discanno. Zijn vader, Raffaele, was een rijke grondbezitter die zijn zoon kon laten studeren onder Giovanni Battista Calò, die ook andere bekende Barlettan schilders begeleidde, waaronder Vincenzo De Stefano, Giuseppe Gabbiani en Raffaele Girondi.
- Nadat hij wegens opstandigheid van de opleiding was verwijderd, legde hij zich toe op het plein air schilderen in Portici en exposeerde in 1864 voor het eerst enkele werken in de ‘Neapolitan Promotrice’. Hij kwam in contact met kunstenaars van de Macchiaioli te Florence en raakte bevriend met Telemaco Signorini.
Studie en Opleiding
Hij studeerde privé schilderen met Vincenzo Petrocelli. Zijn studie aan het Reale Instituto di Belle Arti in Napels gaf hem toegang tot een hoog niveau van kunstzinnigheid en technische kennis, wat essentieel bleek voor zijn latere ontwikkeling als kunstenaar. Hij werd echter verwijderd uit de opleiding vanwege zijn publieke oppositie tegen de Bourbon monarchie en steun voor de eenwording van Italië.- Hij verhuisde naar Parijs in 1867 en ging in de leer bij Jean-Léon Gérôme, waarbij hij kennisnam van klassieke kunsttechnieken en composities. Hij had veel succes met exposities in de salon, onder andere met zijn Che freddo! (*It's So Cold!*) in 1874. Zijn werk werd een belangrijke stimulans voor het impressionistische beweging. Hij nam deel aan de Eerste tentoonstelling van de Impressionisten, gehouden bij Nadar’s, waar hij kennismaakte met Edgar Degas en andere prominente kunstenaars uit Parijs.- Hij ontwikkelde een stijl die gekenmerkt werd door het gebruik van losse penseelstreken en het belang van licht en kleur. Zijn werken zijn vaak gedreven door een intense emotionele ervaring en een poging om de natuurlijke wereld op een authentieke manier weer te geven.
