Jean-Étienne Liotard, een gerenommeerde Genèvese schilder, kunstkenner en dealer, werd geboren op 22 december 1702 in Genève, Zwitserland. Zijn ouders, Franse protestanten, waren na 1685 gevlucht naar Genève. Liotard's artistieke reis begon onder de begeleiding van professoren Daniel Gardelle en Petitot, wier emaille- en miniatuurwerken hij behendig nabootste.Artistieke carrière
Liotard's reizen voerden hem naar diverse Europese hoofdsteden, waaronder Parijs, Rome, Istanbul en Wenen, waar zijn portretten zeer gewild waren. In 1725 studeerde hij onder Jean-Baptiste Massé en François Lemoyne in Parijs.
