- op jonge leeftijd werd hoppner koorknaap in de royal chapel, maar zijn aanleg voor kunst leidde ertoe dat hij in 1775 de royal academy betrad.
- in 1778 ontving hij een zilveren medaille voor tekenen naar het leven, en in 1782 de gouden medaille voor historische schilderkunst met zijn werk over king lear.
