Ideal of reality tangled with desireRan Hong pays special attention to the reality of which external beauty has turned into the ideal tangled with desire as well as the phenomena in which people lose something important by being blind by superficial and illusionary values. People overwhelmed by materialism dream of an ideal space that transcends this reality. However, on the other side, there is an existence cruelly trampled by the desire for utopia. Artist Hong presents crocodiles as a sacrificed existence and a fragile being in carrying on with works. By confronting crocodiles and landscape painting, which is a universal subject for Oriental paintings, in the top-bottom structure, artist Hong shows the aspects of reality in which utopia and dystopia are chaotically blended in diverse ways of painting, installation, and collage.

Biografie van de kunstenaar

Ran Hong: A Tapestry of Buttons and Blossoms

Born in Busan, South Korea, in 1960, Ran Hong’s artistic journey began amidst a fascination for the everyday—specifically, buttons. Initially drawn to their tactile qualities and inherent geometric patterns, she embarked on an exploration that would transform these humble objects into powerful symbols of memory and transformation. This early preoccupation with texture and form foreshadowed her distinctive approach to artmaking, characterized by meticulous layering and a deliberate juxtaposition of seemingly disparate elements. Hong pursued her formal education at Hongik University in Seoul, earning a BFA in Printmaking in 2013. It was during this period that she honed her technical skills and developed an understanding of artistic principles—a foundation crucial for her subsequent explorations into mixed media sculpture. Her MFA from Seoul National University of Science & Technology followed in 2022, solidifying her commitment to pushing creative boundaries and experimenting with innovative techniques. Her artistic vision centers around capturing fleeting moments of beauty and emotion through intricate compositions featuring buttons, beads, pins, and thread—materials she painstakingly arranges into evocative landscapes and floral motifs. These pieces aren’t merely decorative; they are meditations on time, loss, and the enduring power of memory. Hong's work speaks to a profound sensitivity to the human condition, reflecting her own experiences and observations about the world around her. Hong’s artistic career gained momentum with participation in prestigious residencies like SeMA Nanji Residency (Seoul, Korea) in 2015 and Hungary Artist Exchange Program (Budapest, Hungary) in 2016, fostering collaborations and broadening her creative horizons. Her recognition extended to awards such as the Lee Sang Wook Prize (Korean Contemporary Printmakers Association), cementing her position within the Korean art community. Notably, she was selected for The 24th SongEun Art Award (2024) and MMCA Young Exploration 2014 (2014). Hong’s artistic output has garnered considerable acclaim internationally, showcased in galleries across Switzerland, France, Korea, Dubai, Singapore, and numerous other cities. Her work is held by institutions like MMCA Government Art Bank (Korea), MMCA Art Bank (Korea), Koo House Museum (Korea), ARARIO Collection (Korea), and more. She continues to inspire audiences with her unique artistic perspective—a testament to her dedication and unwavering passion for transforming ordinary materials into extraordinary expressions of beauty and contemplation.
