      Early Life, Family and Training

Annie E. Duff entered the world in 1871 in Carleton Place, Ontario. She grew up within a large, bustling household as the second-youngest of nine children. Her parents, William and Elizabeth A. Duff, had brought their Scottish roots to the Canadian landscape, establishing a life that would deeply influence the girl's developing eye. The family settled at Oreno Villa, a homestead located at Duff’s Bay on the 11th Concession of Beckwith, where the rhythms of rural life provided a constant source of observation.

Her early education began simply, within the walls of a one-room school house in Beckwith Township, Lanark, Ontario, specifically at S.S. #14. This foundational schooling was later supplemented by her time at the Prince of Wales School in Carleton Place. As she grew, the natural world around the family homestead became her first teacher. She spent much of her youth studying the birds, animals, and flora of the Ontario countryside, often hiding in the greenery with food in hand to observe the intricate colors and shapes of the creatures that visited her.

By 1891, her interest in the visual arts moved toward formal study. She enrolled in Coligny College, a private school for girls, where she spent two years immersed in formal art classes. This period of study, which lasted until 1893, provided the technical discipline necessary to transform her childhood observations into a structured practice. It was through this rigorous training that Annie E. Duff began to refine the skills that would eventually define her career.

      Professional Career and Artistic Activity

Her ambitions eventually led her away from the quietude of Ontario to the bustling energy of New York City. In the late 1890s, she immersed herself in the study of both painting and fashion design, seeking to refine her technical skill within the city's competitive creative circles. This period of formal training provided the foundation for a diverse professional life that bridged the gap between fine art and commercial illustration. She found work as an illustrator for Vogue Magazine, translating her keen eye for form and detail into the pages of the fashion publication.

Beyond the world of print, she sought employment at Topley’s Photography Studio on Sparks Street, gaining practical experience in the technical nuances of the medium. Her professional output was deeply rooted in the landscapes of her youth. She spent much of her life capturing the essence of rural Ontario through both paintings and photographs. Her subjects were the quiet, essential rhythms of country life: scenic landscapes, the stillness of camping, the labor of farming, and the various activities of recreation. She possessed a particular talent for rendering the natural world, from the delicate shapes of flora to the movement of wildlife and domesticated animals.

      Key Works and Major Paintings

In 1893, Duff sought to present her work at the World’s Columbian Exhibition, though the painting titled Temptation, Sin and it’s Antidote did not arrive in time to be seen there. This large oil on canvas, measuring 205 x 337 x 4.3 cm, eventually found its way into the National Gallery of Canada. When the institution purchased the work in 1976, it was renamed Adam and Eve.

Her brush also captured the profound themes of motherhood during a period when female artists in Canada were often overlooked. In 1895, she completed Woman by the Sea, an oil on canvas that holds a unique place in the nation's art history. It was the first painting of maternity created by a Canadian female artist. This work remains part of the collection at the National Gallery of Canada, where it continues to represent her specific contribution to the country's visual record.
