Born in Audregnies, Belgium, Charles Van Meer was a painter known for his genre scenes, interiors, and still lifes. His work often captured the subtle narratives of family life and the meticulous details of domestic settings. The Prince acquired the piece for Queen Victoria, and it has since been held by the British Royal Collection. Another similar work, Le Garde-manger, was a gift from the Queen to Prince Albert in 1844 and was later bequeathed by the Queen to her daughter, Princess Helena.
