A Life of Expression and Resistance

Born in Sydney, Australia, Édouard Goerg was a painter, printmaker, and illustrator whose life was shaped by profound global shifts. After his family moved to London, Goerg eventually pursued an artistic path, studying at the Académie Ranson under Paul Sérusier and Maurice Denis. His formative years were marked by travel to Italy and India, followed by service as a soldier during the First World War, where he was stationed on the Eastern Front, in Greece, Turkey, and Serbia. These dramatic experiences deeply influenced the subsequent decades of his work.

As a central figure in French Expressionism, Goerg’s art was characterized by radiant colors and unique compositions. His later work saw a shift toward Surrealism, particularly through his lithographs and book illustrations. During the German occupation of France, he demonstrated significant moral conviction by refusing to participate in a state-initiated trip to meet Hitler. Following the death of his wife, Andrée Berolzheimer, in 1944, he experienced a period of deep depression. He remained active in the artistic community, serving as president of the Société des peintres-graveurs français and eventually becoming a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts.

      Artistic Legacy and Illustrations

Goerg’s artistic output spanned various mediums, from large-scale paintings to intricate illustrations for renowned literary works. His portfolio includes illustrations for authors such as:

His exhibitions were held in numerous international locations, including Paris, Chicago, Venice, Cairo, and Rio de Janeiro. Throughout his career, his themes evolved from social critiques of bourgeois morality to depictions of women and floral subjects. He passed away in Callian, France.
