      Life and Artistic Career

Jan van Heel was a Dutch painter born in Rotterdam. His formal training began at the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts and Technical Sciences, where he studied under teachers such as David Bautz, Johannes Gerardus Heijberg, Alexander van Maasdijk, Frederik Nachtweh, and Herman Mees. After obtaining his teaching certificate, he worked in education in Rotterdam before moving to The Hague in 1926, where he served as a drawing teacher at a primary school and later at a Mulo. He also held a teaching position at the Johan de Witt Lyceum and the Vrije Academie.

His artistic journey included a period living and working in Paris from 1945 to 1946. Throughout his career, he was deeply involved in the Dutch art community, co-founding groups such as De Werkers, De Groep, Verve, and Fugare. He was also a member of Pulchri Studio. Beyond painting, he was a prolific designer, creating postage stamps for the PTT for the Melbourne Olympic Games in 1956, and worked as a graphic artist, illustrator, and exlibrist.

      Themes and Style

Associated with the Nieuwe Haagse School, Van Heel's work is characterized by specific thematic interests. He became well known for his depictions of the clown and, following a visit to Spain, his portrayals of the Spanish earth, which he depicted as unpretentious and unaffected. His palette evolved to include a range of colors such as saturated brown, glowing red, burning ochres, and silent green.

His contributions to the arts were recognized through numerous honors, including being appointed a Knight and later an Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau. His work is held in various prestigious collections, including the Rijksmuseum Twenthe, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.
