A Life of Exploration and Artistry

Born in Montreal, Canada, John A. Hammond was a man of diverse pursuits, serving as an adventurer, photographer, artist, printmaker, and art educator. His early years were shaped by manual labor, working with his father, a marble cutter, from the age of nine. After serving in the local militia, he sought his fortune in the Otago gold rush in New Zealand, spending three years searching for gold. Upon returning to Montreal, he worked as a staff photographer for William Notman and joined the Geological Survey of Canada, which mapped the routes for the Canadian Pacific Railway.

His artistic journey took him across the globe. He traveled to Dordrecht in South Holland, where he painted with James McNeill Whistler, and visited the forests of Fontainebleau in France. His work was exhibited at prestigious venues, including the Paris Salon, the Royal Academy in London, and the National Academy of Design in New York City. His paintings were also commissioned by William Van Horne to depict scenes from various railroad routes for CPR hotels and offices.

      Legacy and Recognition

Hammond's career was marked by significant academic and civic contributions. In 1893, he was appointed Head of the Fine Arts Department at Mount Allison University and served as Administrator of the Owens Museum of Fine Arts. His technical skill was recognized internationally when he won a bronze medal at the Canadian exhibition at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1904.

His artistic legacy is preserved in several notable collections, including:

In Sackville, New Brunswick, his influence remains visible through the Hammond Gate at Mount Allison University, which was his design. His former residence in Sackville was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1990.
