The Life and Travels of John W. Bentley

Born in 1880 in Paterson, New Jersey, John W. Bentley was the son of Samuel and Sophia Bentley. His father’s involvement in the silk business provided a stable foundation in a bustling industrial center, yet the path of the artist often leads away from such structured commerce. Bentley’s life was defined by a restless curiosity that eventually pulled him far beyond the borders of his native state.

His movements were extensive and varied. He sought out the light and landscapes of California, Florida, and Hawaii, while also exploring the terrains of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New England. His curiosity was not confined to the American continent; he ventured into Mexico, Canada, and the South Seas. These excursions allowed him to witness a vast array of environments, from the rugged coastlines of the Pacific to the tropical reaches of the southern islands.

The reach of his travels extended across the Atlantic and into the Far East. Bentley’s presence was felt in the Philippines, England, Ireland, France, Scotland, and Spain. This global movement shaped a life lived in constant motion, as he moved between the familiar landscapes of the United States and the diverse vistas of Europe and beyond. He remained a traveler of significant breadth until his death in 1951.

Artistic Activity in Woodstock and Beyond

For much of his life, Bentley was a fixture of the Woodstock community, residing in a small, low-hung barn studio on Tannery Brook Road. This cloister-like workspace allowed him to focus on the immediate landscape, resulting in hundreds of paintings that captured the local character. His brush traced the contours of the hills, the quiet movement of streams, and the architecture of the village, from simple farms and bridges to the local churches. He was a popular figure in the town, known to many as a constant presence within the art colony.

His reach extended far beyond the borders of New York. Bentley sought out new subjects through extensive excursions, traveling through California, Florida, New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New England. His wanderlust eventually took him to Hawaii, Mexico, Canada, and the South Seas. These travels provided a steady stream of fresh material for his canvases, ensuring his work remained varied even as he maintained his roots in the Catskills.

The artist's reputation grew through a wide range of exhibitions. Within the United States, his work was displayed in Buffalo, New York City, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and California. His presence was felt internationally as well, with exhibitions held in the Philippines, England, Ireland, France, Scotland, Spain, and Canada. This global exposure reflected a career that was as much about movement and discovery as it was about the quiet observation of a single, wooded valley.

      Notable Works and Artistic Subjects

Bentley’s brush captured a wide range of subjects, from the human form to the quietude of the American landscape. His early explorations included Female Nude, created between 1906 and 1909. As his focus shifted toward the natural world, he documented the changing seasons and the specific character of the Northeast. This is evident in The Village Stream, painted by May 1912, and Lasher’s Farm in Winter, which dates from approximately 1912 to 1915. He possessed a particular affinity for the stillness of the colder months, a theme he revisited in 1917 with Winter Hush.

The artist frequently returned to the topography of the mountains and the rural architecture of New England. His 1934 work, Winter in the Catskill Mountains, remains a significant part of his record. He also turned his attention to the structures of local life, such as in The Mill, Woodstock, Vermont, an oil on canvas measuring 32 x 40 1/4 in. (82 x 102 cm). Through these varied subjects, he recorded the light and atmosphere of the places he inhabited and traveled.
