      An Illustrious Life in Illustration

Katharine Pyle was an American illustrator and author who focused her creative efforts primarily on books for young people. Born in Wilmington, United States, she was a member of the Pyle artistic family, the daughter of leather manufacturer William Pyle and writer Margaret Churchman Painter, and the sister of Howard Pyle. Her early artistic inclinations were nurtured by her family, and she received formal training at the Women's Industrial School in Philadelphia, the Drexel Institute, and the Philadelphia School of Design for Women. After moving to New York City to enroll at the Art Students League, she began receiving commissions from St. Nicholas magazine and Harper’s Bazaar.

Her professional reputation was significantly cemented by the publication of her 1898 book, The Counterpane Fairy. Throughout her career, she published over 30 books, often collaborating with friends and classmates from her studies. Her work spanned various genres, including fairy tales and accounts of Delaware's colonial history. In her later years, her publications often focused on legendary fairy tales containing moral messages, such as her 1933 anthology, Charlemagne and his Knights.
