The Path from Law to Color

Born in Seville, Spain, Luis Gordillo began his adult life on a path quite different from the one he eventually carved out for himself. He initially pursued a degree in law, a discipline of logic and structure that seems a world away from the visual language he would later adopt. However, the pull of the canvas proved stronger than the pull of the courtroom. He left the study of law behind to attend the School of Fine Arts in Seville, seeking a way to express the world through sight rather than statute.

In 1958, Gordillo made a significant move to Paris. This was a period of heavy censorship in Spain under the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, and the freedom found in France allowed his creative spirit to breathe and expand. His time in Paris was not without its struggles. During the 1960s, he faced a period of artistic crisis, a time when his work stripped away complexity to focus on nothing more than basic shapes and forms.

      Evolution of Form and Color

The way Gordillo approached the canvas changed as the decades passed, moving through distinct phases of intensity and abstraction. His work underwent a significant renewal in 1970, marked by a sudden embrace of bright colors that broke through the simplicity of his previous years. By the 1980s, his style shifted again, moving toward a more abstract and less colorful approach. His career is marked by several notable works and honors, including:

      • National Award for Plastic Arts (1981)
      • Premio Velázquez de las Artes Plásticas (2007)
      • Segunda serie roja (1982)
      • Gran bombo duplex (1967)
      • Choque (1968)

A Legacy in Museums and Books

Gordillo’s influence is felt in the halls of major institutions, with his paintings finding a home in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. His ability to explore themes like duplicity was highlighted in a major exhibition at the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español in Cuenca, which featured fifty-seven works produced between 1964 and 2003. This exhibition later traveled to the Museu Fundación Juan March in Palma.

Beyond the canvas, he has shared his thoughts through writing, publishing a book titled Little Memories in 2017. His life's work remains a significant part of the Spanish contemporary landscape, moving from the structured world of law to a deeply personal and evolving visual language.
