      Early Life and Artistic Training

Štefan Prukner entered the world on October 28, 1931, in the village of Stratená. His early years in this setting provided the foundation for a life dedicated to visual expression. As he grew, his interest in the arts led him away from his birthplace toward the academic rigor of the city.

Between 1951 and 1956, Štefan Prukner pursued his formal education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava. He chose to focus his studies within the landscape painting department, a decision that would shape his technical approach for years to come. During this formative period, he had the opportunity to learn under the guidance of professors Bedrich Hoffstädter and Dezider Milly. These years of study allowed him to refine his skills and develop the discipline required for a professional career in painting and graphic arts.

      Academic Career and Teaching

In 1961, Štefan Prukner began a significant chapter of his life as an educator. He joined the Department of Art Education within the Faculty of Education at Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica. His presence there was foundational, as he helped shape the department during its early years. By 1967, his contributions to the academic community were recognized when he was named an associate professor.

The stability of his academic life was interrupted by the political shifts of the era. During the period of normalization, he was forced to leave the university. This departure marked the end of his formal teaching career and redirected his professional path. In 1971, he moved to Banská Štiavnica, where he began working as a freelance artist. This transition allowed him to focus entirely on his personal creative practice away from the constraints of the university system.

      Artistic Focus and Major Works

Štefan Prukner’s creative output was diverse, spanning the delicate precision of graphic art to the expressive freedom of painting. He was particularly skilled in printmaking, where he worked with woodcuts and etchings to explore texture and form. This technical versatility allowed him to move between the intimate scale of an illustration and the broader compositions found in his paintings. His ability to translate complex ideas into visual language led him to become a prolific illustrator, contributing significant work to books such as Cigánske piesne and Nerušte moje kruhy.

His paintings often captured moments of tension or quiet observation. Some of his notable subjects included scenes of daily life and animal studies, such as his depictions of a bullfight or sheep. His work reached beyond his local surroundings, earning recognition during exhibitions held at the National Gallery in Bucharest. This international presence highlighted the reach of his visual storytelling, which remained a constant throughout his long career.

      Later Years and Death

After leaving his teaching position during the period of normalization, Štefan Prukner moved to Banská Štiavnica. He spent the remaining years of his life there working as a freelance artist. This period allowed him to continue his prolific output, contributing to a career that spanned more than half a century. Throughout his life, he produced tens of thousands of visual works, ranging from paintings to graphic prints and illustrations.

His creative output left a significant mark that reached far beyond his immediate surroundings. His pieces have found their way into various collections all over the world. On May 24, 2011, Štefan Prukner passed away in Banská Bystrica. He left behind a vast body of work that continues to be held in galleries and private collections across the globe.
