Theodorus Netscher entered the world in Bordeaux, though his hands learned their craft far from France. He was the son of Caspar Netscher, and he spent much of his formative time in The Hague, studying under his father's watchful eye. It was during his years in Paris, from 1680 until 1699, that he became known by the name de Fransche Netscher.
