Beskrivelse av samleobjektet

The black polished clock consists of a prismatic base, a central part that is opened up and articulated with two pillars and two half-pillars, and an upper cubic element containing the movement and dial. The moving figures on the dial – cupids forging arrows – are activated when certain time segments are struck. This clock is of high quality production of portal clocks with stylistic features of the late Empire Clocks in the form of portals were a particularity of clock design in the Habsburg Empire in the 1810s and 1820s. Clockmaker Marcus Gohm, an Austrian who became a citizen of Varaždin in 1818 and worked in the town, leaving a considerable quantity of clocks with Empire and early Biedermeier stylistic features. A portal clock signed Marcus Gohm in Steinamanger is also preserved, telling of his activity in Hungary.

The Intersection of Structure and Vision: The Artistry of Markus Gohm

In the quiet, architectural landscapes of Feldkirch, Austria, a unique creative consciousness began to take shape in 1955. Markus Gohm is an artist whose very essence is defined by the seamless bridge he has built between the rigid precision of architectural design and the evocative, fleeting beauty of photography. To observe his work is to witness a profound dialogue between the permanent and the ephemeral, where the heavy materiality of the built environment meets the delicate interplay of light and shadow. His practice does not merely document space; it explores the soul of structure, reflecting a deep engagement with both the physical world and its emotional resonance.

Gohm’s artistic foundation was laid within the rigorous halls of architectural academia. Studying at the Technische Universität Innsbruck from 1976 to 1984, he developed an acute sensitivity to the fundamental principles of spatial organization, materiality, and structural integrity. This period of intense formal training instilled in him a meticulous approach to composition—a discipline that would later become the backbone of his photographic vision. However, Gohm was never content with purely technical execution. Influenced by humanist ideals, he sought to understand how constructed spaces shape the human experience, looking beyond the concrete and steel to find the poetry hidden within the geometry of our surroundings.

A Photographic Lens on Form and Function

As his career progressed, Gohm transitioned into the realm of photography, finding in the lens a medium capable of distilling complex architectural narratives into singular, powerful visual moments. His photographic work is characterized by an extraordinary sensitivity to light, mirroring the precision he cultivated as an architect. He approaches a landscape or an urban vista with the eye of a designer, analyzing the weight of shadows and the rhythm of lines. Through diverse techniques—ranging from large-format landscape prints that capture the grandeur of the Alps to intimate portraits that explore human presence within a frame—he conveys a nuanced spectrum of emotion.

The recurring motifs in his oeuvre often draw from his Austrian heritage, featuring alpine landscapes and urban vistas that demonstrate an unwavering commitment to portraying both beauty and dynamism. In these images, the distinction between architecture and nature begins to blur; a mountain ridge may possess the structural rhythm of a cathedral, while a modern building might reflect the organic textures of the earth. This fluidity is central to his aesthetic, creating a body of work that feels both grounded in reality and elevated by artistic abstraction.

Legacy of Design and Creative Achievement

Beyond his individual photographic pursuits, Gohm’s impact on the contemporary Austrian art and design scene is marked by his collaborative spirit and professional excellence. In 1991, he co-founded Gohm Hiessberger Architects in Feldkirch, a practice that embodies his philosophy of designing with a sense of poetry that extends beyond mere utility. His architectural contributions have been recognized with prestigious accolades, including nominations for the Staatspreis für Architektur and various ZV-Bauherrenpreis awards, particularly for projects like the Krankenhaus Dornbirn.

His career is a testament to the idea that different disciplines are not separate silos but interconnected threads of a single creative tapestry. Whether he is designing a functional urban development or capturing a transient moment of light on a stone facade, Gohm remains dedicated to the exploration of form and function. His work stands as a significant contribution to contemporary visual culture, reminding us that the spaces we inhabit and the way we perceive them are deeply intertwined in the ongoing story of human identity.
