Born in the vibrant coastal town of Jacmel, Haiti, Pauleus Vital did not begin his professional life with a brush in hand. At the age of twenty-one, Vital moved to Port-au-Prince to further his career in building, yet the seeds of a different creative calling were already beginning to take root.

This pivotal transformation was sparked by his half-brother, Prefete Duffaut, who introduced him to the renowned Centre d’Art. In 1959, Vital returned to his roots in Jacmel, where the natural beauty surrounding his home by the river became a primary source of inspiration. However, his vision often transcended the purely observational, venturing into the profound and the spiritual through depictions of subterranean Vodou ceremonies.
