      Early Life and Artistic Training

Douglas Dundas was born in 1900 in the country of New South Wales, near Inverell. His early years were spent on a family property in that region, where the landscape and the quiet rhythms of rural life provided his first surroundings. It was during this time that he began to feel a pull toward painting, a desire that only grew stronger as he matured.

A significant shift occurred in 1921 when he met Elioth Gruner. This meeting seemed to cement his intention to pursue art seriously. By 1922, he had moved to Sydney to seek out formal instruction. He spent his evenings enrolled in classes at the Sydney Art School, working through the lessons after the day's other demands had passed.

His technical development took a major step forward in 1927 when he was awarded the Society of Artists’ Travelling Scholarship. This allowed him to leave Australia for a period of study in London, where he attended the Regent Street Polytechnic from 1927 to 1928. These years of formal training and travel shaped the foundation of his practice before he returned to his teaching and administrative roles in Australia.

Studies in Europe and Teaching Career

In 1929, the focus shifted toward Europe. Time was spent studying in Italy and France, where the light and forms of the continent took hold. In Paris, the Académie Lhote provided a specific environment for his development. These years abroad offered a chance to observe different approaches to the canvas before returning to Australia.

By 1930, a teaching appointment began at the National Art School in Sydney. This became a central part of his life for many decades. He remained within the school's walls until his retirement in 1965. In 1960, he moved into the role of Head of the National Art School, overseeing the institution's direction during a significant period of his career.

      Notable Works and Collections

His brushwork often captured specific, quiet moments of light and landscape. In 1942, he produced a Self-portrait, an oil on canvas measuring 90.5 x 75 cm. This work was presented for the Archibald Prize that same year. Another notable piece is Cloudy day on the links, painted in 1951. This smaller oil on canvas, measuring 29 x 39.5cm, focuses on the subtle shifts of a day spent outdoors.

His paintings have found their way into many different hands and institutions. They are held in the National Gallery of Australia and are present in all state galleries. Beyond these major public spaces, his work resides in regional, institutional, corporate, and private collections. These holdings stretch across Australia, England, and America.
