      Early Life, Family and Training

Frans Slager was born on April 23, 1876, in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. He grew up within a family where the brush was a common tool; he was the second son of the artist Piet Slager sr. Artistry ran through the household, as his brother Piet Jr. and his sisters Corry and Jeanette were also painters. This environment shaped his early years, as he began his training as a student under his father's guidance.

His formal education moved from the domestic sphere to the Royal School in 's-Hertogenbosch. Seeking further refinement, he traveled to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he studied from 1903 to 1905. During this period of development, he also spent time as a student with Frans Van Leemputten. These years of study provided the technical foundation for the landscapes and cityscapes he would later produce.

      Artistic Activity and Subjects

Slager’s brush often returned to the landscapes, characters, and cities of Brabant. He spent much of his time capturing the specific light and forms of this region. The cathedral of 's-Hertogenbosch held a particular place in his practice. He did not limit himself to a single medium when approaching the structure, instead rendering it through engravings, watercolors, drawings, and paintings. His work moved between these different ways of seeing, sometimes focusing on the broad view and other times on the fine lines of a sketch.

His interests extended beyond the borders of the Netherlands. He traveled through France, Germany, and Italy, bringing back observations from these different locales. Within his professional circles, he was a member of the Saint Luc and the Arti en Amicitiae artists' association. His domestic life was also tied to the arts, as he was married to the painter M.P.A. van Gilse.

His output included various studies and views of the local surroundings, such as:

      Key Works and Catalogued Pieces

Slager’s brush often returned to the familiar rhythms of the Brabant landscape and the architecture of his surroundings. Around 1920, he captured the activity of the Market at 's-Hertogenbosch, focusing on the movement within the town. His interest in the local skyline is evident in his work titled Sight at the St. Jan from the north, a subject he revisited through various mediums including engravings and watercolors.

The artist also spent time documenting the quietude of the natural world. His studies of the landscape include a view of the Landscape to the Nethe and a piece titled Landscape near Meerhout (Belgium) from about 1948. These works reflect a steady observation of the terrain and the light passing over the Belgian Campine and the southern regions he traveled through.

In the later years of his career, his output included more focused technical explorations. This is seen in a series of Ten oil studies created about 1942. His catalog includes several other specific depictions of the region, such as:

      • De Sint Jan gezien vanaf het Muntelbolwerk in de winter
      • De markt te 's-Hertogenbosch
      • De Nethe

Where to See the Works Today

Much of the Slager family's output remains in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. The Museum Slager, located at 8 Choorstraat, holds a collection dedicated to the work of eight local painters from three generations of the Slager family. It is a place where the lineage of the family is kept, with works spanning from the Renaissance Revival to Post-Impressionism.

Inside the museum, you can find pieces by the Slager family alongside works by other painters. The collection includes paintings and drawings by Pieter de Josselin de Jong and Herman Moerkerk. These pieces are held within the museum's walls, which are situated not far from St. John's Cathedral.
