      The Light of the Outskirts

Fridolin Johansen found his way into the studio through the guidance of Vilhelm Kyhn in 1882. By the mid-1880s, he was a student at Zahrtmanns skole, a place where the brushwork began to take on a different character. His early work often focused on the edges of Copenhagen and the lively atmosphere of the Deer park. In these scenes, such as his depiction of a summer evening at the fun fair, he leaned into an impressionist style. He used color and light to anchor his compositions, often placing large foreground elements that pulled the viewer directly into the scene.

There was a certain restlessness in his life, a movement between the social energy of the city and the quietude of the countryside. This shift is visible in how he approached his subjects. While his earlier years were spent capturing the movement of crowds and the flickering light of public gatherings, his focus shifted when he spent time on Mors between 1893 and 1894. During those years, the compositions changed. He turned toward landscapes and depictions of common people, drawing on older traditions to find a sense of stillness.

A Study in Color and Place

The way Johansen handled a canvas reveals a preference for the immediate sensation of a place. His work from the late 1880s through the turn of the century shows a preoccupation with how light settles on a landscape, whether it is the winter outskirts of a city or the open fields of the coast. His paintings are not merely records of a location but are built from the way light and color interact in a specific moment.

His technical choices reflect a commitment to the atmosphere of his surroundings:

      • The use of bold, large foreground sections to establish depth.
      • A focus on the interplay of light and color to define form.
      • A transition from the bustling energy of urban fairs to the quietude of rural life.

His presence in the Danish art scene was marked by this ability to move between the fleeting impressions of modern life and the more grounded, traditional studies of the landscape. Even in his smaller works, there is a sense of the weight of the air and the specific temperature of the light he sought to capture.
