The Life and Craft of George Cooke
Born in London, United Kingdom, George Cooke was an English line engraver who began his professional journey as an apprentice to James Basire. Following his apprenticeship, he contributed to various significant publications, including engraving plates for Brewer's The Beauties of England and Wales, often working alongside his brother, William Bernard Cooke. His technical skill as a copper engraver allowed him to produce detailed works for Pinkerton's Collection of Voyages and Travels and several editions of The Thames.
Cooke's career was marked by a prolific output of engravings based on the works of other artists. He notably engraved fifteen plates for Picturesque Views on the Southern Coast of England, which were based on drawings by Turner. His diverse body of work includes:
Later Works and Artistic Legacy
In his later years, Cooke collaborated with his son, Edward William Cooke, to produce Views of the Old and New London Bridges. He was also an original member of the Society of Associated Engravers, a group dedicated to engraving pictures in the National Gallery. While he attempted to work in the mezzotint style, specifically on a plate of Arundel Castle after Turner, this particular endeavor was not published.
Cooke's professional life was interrupted by financial difficulties following the loss of proceeds from his engraving of Rotterdam, which led to the abandonment of certain planned plates. He died in Barnes, United Kingdom.
