During this formative period, he attended the Julian Ashton Art School. His career later transitioned into commercial design at Paramount Films Art Department in Surry Hills, a position he held until 1962. Throughout his life, Lawrence maintained a dual career as a commercial artist and a painter of landscapes and urban scenes.
