Early Life and Artistic Training
Hans Best was born on 25 August 1874 in Mannheim. He grew up as the son of a master carpenter in the same city. This early environment provided a foundation of manual craft before he turned toward the formal study of art. His path led him away from the woodworking shop and toward the academic halls of Munich.
On 30 October 1894, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. He entered the nature class to refine his technical skills, studying under Karl Raupp. During these formative years, Wilhelm von Diez also served as one of his teachers. These instructors helped shape his development as a painter, sculptor, illustrator, and teacher.
Professional Career and Teaching
After finishing his studies, he spent a year in Trieste. This period of travel preceded his return to Munich, where he opened his own atelier. He became an active part of the local art scene, joining the Munich Artists' Association. His involvement with the group went beyond membership; he was chosen to serve as a jury member for their annual exhibitions.
His professional life was marked by frequent movement through Italy, France, and Belgium. These travels provided a steady stream of visual material for his work. In Munich, he held a position as a professor of graphics at the Royal School of Applied Arts. His teaching role allowed him to influence the technical development of others through the study of graphic arts.
Artistic Output and Major Works
His hands often moved between the brush and the chisel. While he painted many scenes, he was primarily active as an animal sculptor. His genre paintings frequently carried a humorous element, capturing moments of Bavarian country life that resonated with many. These scenes were so popular that many of his paintings found a second life as widely distributed postcard motifs.
In 1913, he worked on the decoration for the lunettes in Auerbachs Keller in Leipzig. His illustrative work also extended to publishing, where he produced a series of wall panel illustrations for the Ernst Wasmuth Verlag. Toward the end of his career, his presence in large exhibitions remained steady; between 1937 and 1942, he exhibited 30 paintings and four sculptures at the Great German Art Exhibitions.
Awards and Later Years
Recognition for his work came steadily through the early decades of the twentieth century. In 1913, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Glaspalast exhibition. A few years later, in 1916, he received the Austrian State Medal. These honors followed a period of consistent presence in the Munich art scene, where his paintings and sculptures were frequently displayed.
His later years saw continued involvement in major exhibitions, including the Great German Art Exhibitions held between 1937 and 1942. During this time, he contributed thirty paintings and four sculptures to these shows. In 1940, the City of Munich awarded him the Lenbach Prize. He remained active in the Munich art community until his death in Munich on 3 March 1942.
