The Life and Travels of Karl Ross
Karl Ross was a German painter born in Ruhwinkel. He received his artistic training at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he was academically distinguished and received an academic prize. During his time at the academy, he sold several oil paintings to prince Christian Frederick, the future Christian VIII. His artistic journey took him through many significant cities, including Munich, Rome, and Paris.
Ross is most known for his paintings of classical landscapes. Much of his work was executed during travels through Greece between 1837 and 1839, often accompanied by his brother, the classical archaeologist Ludwig Ross. His travels included journeys through Attica to Marathon, as well as visits to sites such as Sparta, Ephesus, Magnesia, and Smyrna.
Later Years and Legacy
In addition to his artistic pursuits, Ross briefly held a political role as a representative of the revolutionary government of Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenberg during the attempted rebellion against Danish rule in 1848. He was sent to Berlin to report news from the revolt and negotiate assistance.
Ross married Helene Abendroth in 1847. Throughout his life, he was affected by ill health. He eventually settled permanently in Munich, where he died of typhus.
