The Visionary Worlds of Roy De Forest

Roy De Forest was an American painter, sculptor, and teacher who played a significant role in the Funk art and Nut art movements of the Bay Area in California. Born in North Platte, United States, his early life was shaped by the experience of growing up on a farm, a background that deeply influenced his later artistic subjects. His work is characterized by quirky, comical fantasy lands populated by bright colors and various creatures, most notably dogs. These compositions often feature a sense of randomness, rejecting bilateral symmetry in favor of a patchwork, comic-like style that includes motifs evocative of people and animals.

His creative process involved a unique approach to invention, where he often sought an image that would fit a specific paint texture rather than expressing a pre-existing image. He frequently utilized water-based paints mixed with polyvinyl acetate to create heavy, tactile textures, sometimes incorporating materials like gravel or fillers to achieve a scorched or rough surface. His paintings often include distinctive dots, which became a trademark of his visual language.

      Academic and Professional Journey

De Forest’s formal education began at Yakima Junior College before he moved to California to study at the California School of Fine Arts, where he earned a bachelor's degree. After serving in the US Army as a sign painter, he obtained a master's degree from San Francisco State College. His teaching career was extensive, spanning from Yakima Junior College to the Bay Area prison, San Quentin, and eventually a long tenure at the University of California, Davis. At U.C. Davis, he served as a professor for twenty-seven years, working alongside notable artists such as Robert Arneson and Wayne Thiebaud.

Throughout his career, De Forest exhibited his work in numerous solo shows across various galleries in cities like San Francisco, New York, and Chicago. His art evolved from early experiments with Abstract Expressionism and assemblage toward more representational works that suggested dream worlds and personal mythologies. He remained active in the art world, continuing to exhibit for over fifty years until his death in Vallejo, California.
