A Life Between Basel and Rome

Born in Basel, Switzerland, Rudolf Müller was a landscape painter who spent much of his life traveling through the landscapes of Europe. At the age of fifteen, he left Basel with his friend Friedrich Horner to work in the Alps, primarily serving English travelers to earn a living for their journeys. After receiving support from an English family in the Bernese Oberland, they were sent to Paris for further training. The pair eventually traveled to Italy, arriving in Naples in 1822, where they worked for thirteen years and were eventually granted honorary citizenship by the City Council.

Müller’s life was marked by his connection to Rome. Although he and Horner had to return to Basel during the revolutionary and restoration periods of 1848 and 1849 due to a lack of commissions, Müller eventually returned to Rome. He married Waldburga Güttinger of Zurich in 1864 and remained a resident of the city until his death in 1885. He was buried in the Cimitero acattolico in Rome, where he had maintained friendships with other Swiss artists, including the sculptor Ferdinand Schlöth and the landscape painter Johann Jakob Frey.

      Artistic Style and Subject Matter

Müller’s oeuvre focused on landscapes and monuments, specifically those found in the Campagna, the Alban and Sabine mountains, Naples, and the coastal regions of the Amalfi Coast and Paestum. He was among the first Swiss artists to travel and depict Sicily, Greece, and Istanbul. His works, which were sought after by buyers from Russia and England, were also exhibited at major art exhibitions in European capitals.

His approach to painting often involved the aesthetic idealization of real landscapes, sometimes combining two different viewpoints within a single composition to create a more impactful scene than reality. His technique evolved significantly over time; while his early work followed the tradition of Veduta painting, his later works utilized a more airy, "pointillistic" technique. His use of color, developed alongside Horner, allowed him to express a unique and unmistakable atmosphere in his paintings.
