A Canadian landscape painter and founding member of the Beaver Hall Group. Discover his vibrant, powerful works today.
1881 - 1956, Canada
Born in Hamilton, Canada, Albert Henry Robinson was a painter who dedicated much of his career to capturing the essence of the landscape. His artistic journey began with studies under John S. Gordon at the Hamilton Art School, followed by formative years in Paris. During his time in France, he studied at the Académie Julian with Bouguereau and Bashet, and at the École des Beaux-Arts with Gabriel Ferrier and Thomas William Marshall. By 1908, his focus shifted toward the Quebec landscape, leading him to move to Montreal.
Robinson's career was marked by significant professional milestones and contributions to the Canadian art scene. He was an invited contributor to the first Group of Seven exhibition in 1920 and became an academician of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts that same year. Furthermore, he was a founding member of the Beaver Hall Group in 1920 and the Canadian Group of Painters in 1933.
In his approach to painting, Robinson utilized a rolling rhythm of landscape parallel to the picture plane. His work is distinguished by a unique palette, employing unusual colors such as corals, pinks, and dark blue to achieve simplified, powerful forms. He often painted alongside A.Y. Jackson, traveling to various locations including Brittany, France, and the shores of the St. Lawrence River. While he explored the south shore of the Saint Lawrence, he frequently preferred the north shore, making annual trips to Beaupré and Charlevoix counties throughout the 1920s and early 1930s.
His professional life also included service as an inspector of munitions during World War I and a commission from the Canadian War Memorials to paint the Vickers Shipbuilding plant in Montreal. Following a heart attack and subsequent arthritis, he ceased painting by 1936. His legacy is preserved in several notable collections, including:
