However, Blacklock’s success was tragically cut short by declining health and eyesight. By 1850, he returned to Cumwhitton, continuing to work in his studio as long as possible. Sadly, he succumbed to mental health challenges, attributed to syphilis, and was admitted to the Crichton Royal Hospital in Dumfries in 1855.
