      The mechanics of a life

Alexandre-Nicolas Théroude arrived in Paris in 1823, a sixteen-year-old boy from Saint-Pierre-en-Val. By 1828, he was working alongside Monsieur Varin in a toy shop on rue Tiquetonne. His early years were shaped by the steady movement of commerce and the acquisition of a dowry from his wife, Adelaide Elizabeth Bassot, which provided the footing needed to open his own firm at 257 rue St Denis in 1831.

The business was not always stable. A crisis following the Revolution of 1830 led to a bankruptcy in 1840, leaving him with a loss of over 30,000 francs. He stayed in the trade by refocusing his efforts. He stopped importing simple toys from Germany and turned his attention entirely to the creation of large automata. This shift changed the nature of his workshop, moving it through various addresses in Paris, including Rue de Montmorency.

      The movement within the machine

Théroude worked with metal, bellows, and valves to mimic the living world. He was known for a specific technical change: placing the mechanical movement inside the body of the figure itself, rather than hiding it in a separate base or pedestal. This allowed for a more seamless illusion of life. His hands worked on the fine details of barrel parts and the composition of what appeared to be doll flesh.

His creations often took the form of animals or figures that performed specific, small actions:

      • A child in a cradle that could say "Papa" and "Mama."
      • A monkey playing the violin with moving cheeks and lips.
      • An acrobat equipped with a balancer.
      • Sheep and goats that produced bleating sounds.
      • A squirrel running around a copper basin.

      Exhibitions and later years

The public saw his work in Paris, London, and at various international exhibitions. In 1855, his life-size animal automata were noted for their natural movements. By the 1862 London Exhibition, his progress was visible in more complex pieces, such as an organ decorated with scenes of automata. One notable piece, a flute player, utilized a mechanical barrel organ hidden within its chest to create the sound of music.

The later years brought economic difficulty once more. The aftermath of the war with Prussia and the Revolution of 1871 contributed to a second bankruptcy in January 1878. This time, the company could not be saved. He died in Gentilly in 1883.
