      The Geometry of Presence

Born in London in 1932, Cyril Lixenberg moved through the creative centers of Europe, studying at the Central School of Arts and Crafts before refining his vision at the école nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris. By 1959, he had established his life in Amsterdam, a city that would host his long-term evolution as a sculptor, painter, and graphic artist. His work is defined by a rigorous pursuit of the essential, stripping away the superfluous to confront the fundamental properties of shape and space.

He sought a minimum of means to achieve a maximum of spatial impact. His practice was an endless experiment with the most basic elements of geometry: the circle, the triangle, and the square. These were not static symbols but active participants in a constant state of change, shifting their function and context through subtle manipulation. He often worked with unpainted metal, specifically Corten steel, allowing the material's natural character to speak alongside the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue.

      The Language of Form

Lixenberg’s approach to sculpture was a deliberate dialogue between the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional. He manipulated flat, geometric planes until they transformed into complex spatial objects. His work often functions as a visual anchor within vast, horizontal landscapes, such as the Flevopolder, where his structures act as landmarks against the flat expanse of the land. His technical focus included:

      • The use of Corten steel to achieve a raw, industrial texture.
      • A restricted palette centered on primary colors.
      • The interplay between open and closed geometric structures.
      • The creation of works that change appearance based on the viewer's perspective.

      A Measured Legacy

The precision of his compositions often creates a tension between simplicity and complexity. A work might appear as a simple arrangement of circles and squares, yet it reveals its true nature only when viewed from a specific angle, turning a solid object into a frame for the surrounding environment. This ability to manipulate perception allowed his sculptures to exist as both objects and windows, integrating the landscape into the art itself.

His career spanned several decades, leaving a permanent mark on the Dutch landscape through public works and private collections. He remained active in his practice until 2008, leaving behind a body of work that remains rooted in the strict logic of geometric abstraction. He died in Amsterdam in 2015, having spent a lifetime refining the relationship between the shape and the space it occupies.
