The Life and Versatility of Domenico Ferri
Domenico Ferri was an Italian architect, scenographer, painter, and theatre designer. Born in Molinella, Italy, he received his artistic training at the Academy of Bologna under Antonio Basoli and Francesco Cocchi. His career was marked by extensive collaboration within the theatrical world, including work at the San Samuele and San Luca theaters in Venice, and various theaters in Lugo, Bologna, Ferrara, Modena, Rome, Ancona, Senigallia, and Padua. He was a close friend of Gioachino Rossini, collaborating on several of the composer's operas, such as La Cenerentola, La donna del lago, and La Semiramide. His work as a set designer also extended to the Théâtre Royal Italien de Paris.
Architectural and Vedutista Pursuits
Beyond the stage, Ferri was a practitioner of vedutismo, a style of landscape painting focused on views. In 1833, he won the first prize of the Courland competition at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna for his work Una fattoria. His paintings of the Caen Cathedral were exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1836. Later in life, Ferri moved to Turin, where he served as a professor at the Academy and as a royal decorator. His architectural contributions included the renovation of royal apartments in Moncalieri and the restoration of the Palazzo Carignano. His decorative work also spanned the Medici villas of Poggio a Caiano, La Petraia, and San Rossore.
