A Versatile Visionary of American Art

Edna Reindel was a multifaceted American artist whose career spanned from the 1920s through the 1960s. As a painter, sculptor, draftsperson, illustrator, muralist, and teacher, she demonstrated a remarkable breadth of talent. Her formal artistic journey began in 1918 at the Detroit School of Design, followed by studies at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where she graduated in 1923. Throughout her career, she worked as a freelance illustrator and painter, earning the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Fellowship in both 1926 and 1932.

Her body of work is characterized by diverse subject matter, ranging from New England landscapes to large-scale murals. During the Great Depression, she was commissioned by the WPA to create easel paintings for federal buildings, including works now located in the Pentagon and the Department of Labor building in Washington, D.C. Her artistic output also included:

      Style and Subject Matter

Reindel's stylistic approach evolved through various descriptions, including American Regionalism, Formalist Realism, and what she herself termed "psycho-realist." Her early still-life and landscape works often exhibited surreal tendencies. In the 1940s, she gained notoriety for her series "The Effects of War on People," which addressed the fear and horror of the atom bomb through works such as Hiroshima and The Praying Mothers.

In addition to her painting and mural work, Reindel was a skilled illustrator and worked in metal sculpture during the 1950s and 1960s. She also applied her restoration skills to work for the philanthropist Doris Duke. Her ability to capture the essence of her subjects was evident in her commissioned depictions of women workers in shipyard and aircraft industries, which helped to popularize the imagery associated with "Rosie the Riveter."
