      1865 - 1961

      Early Life, Family and Training

Georg Waltenberger enters the world on 14 August 1865 in Blieskastel, Germany. He is born into a household defined by intellectual and technical precision. His father, Anton Waltenberger, works as a tax official, a cartographer, and an author. This environment of structured observation provides the backdrop for Georg's development. The family name eventually becomes associated with the Waltenberger-Haus, a legacy tied to his father's contributions to the study of the northern Alps.

The path toward professional painting leads Georg to the Kunstakademie in Munich. Here, the training is rigorous and diverse. He studies under the guidance of Carl Theodor von Piloty, Nikolaus Gysis, and Wilhelm von Lindenschmit. In the composition class led by Lindenschmit, a significant connection forms. Georg meets the Tyrolean painter Albin Egger-Lienz, a friendship that develops within the academic walls of the academy. This period of study establishes the technical foundation for his later focus on portraiture and history painting.

Artistry remains a familial trait. His daughter, Virginie, follows a similar path, though her focus shifts toward the depiction of flowers. While Georg moves toward large-scale historical subjects and portraits of significant figures, the family's creative impulse remains a constant thread. He eventually settles much of his life in Salzberg near Berchtesgaden, a location far from his birthplace in Blieskastel.

      Artistic Career and Major Works

The Munich Glaspalast and various international exhibitions provide the stage for Waltenberger’s rise. His presence in these venues is marked by large-scale, figure-heavy compositions. A turning point arrives in 1897 in Dresden. There, his three-part colossal painting, Weltuntergang, earns him the Kleine Goldene Medaille. The scale of the work signals a shift toward the grand historical narratives that would define his career.

Political and civic history becomes his primary subject. He captures the tension of the Reichstag in Der Kanzler spricht, a large-scale depiction of Bernhard von Bülow. This focus on monumental history extends to the Munich Palace of Justice. Alongside Angelo Jank, Adolf Münzer, and Walter Püttner, he contributes to the decoration of the Schwurgerichtssaal with the motif Sturz der Verdammten. Even the foundation stone of the new German Museum in Munich, laid by Kaiser Wilhelm II., provides the impetus for another significant historical scene.

While his public works command large spaces, his private output is vast. He produces over 600 portraits, moving between the high-stakes world of the House of Wittelsbach and the technical spheres of science. His brush captures the likenesses of figures such as Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen and Rudolf Diesel.

      Later Years and Death

The landscape of Salzberg, near Berchtesgaden, becomes the backdrop for the final decades of Waltenberger's life. He maintains a residence in this area, a house that anchors his presence in the region. His connection to his roots remains a constant, evidenced by the honorary citizenship granted to him by his birthplace, Blieskastel. This recognition bridges his origins in Germany with the life he built in the mountains.

Recognition follows his long-standing presence in the community. On 4 November 1947, Berchtesgaden awards him honorary citizenship, a distinction marking his significant contributions to the area, including his work in decorating the Kursaal built in 1930. The recognition solidifies his status within the town that became his home.

The end comes in Berchtesgaden. He dies on 5 February 1961. His final resting place is the Old Cemetery in Berchtesgaden, where his grave is located.
