A student of Jean-Paul Laurens at the École des beaux-arts de Paris, Surand began exhibiting at the Salon des artistes français in 1881, where he received an honorable mention in 1884. He was known for his ability to capture the powerful moment an animal tenses itself before a leap, often depicting large predators based on studies from nature.
