      A Life of Royal Service

Born in Flensborg to a merchant named Valentin Krock and Volborg Peters, Hendrick Krock entered the world in 1671. His path toward the brush began early; by age eleven, he was already studying under Johan Ayerschöttel of Husum. This early training provided the foundation for a career that would eventually place him at the very center of Danish royal life. He moved to Copenhagen in 1688, where he taught drawing and sought further instruction from Peder Andersen at Frederiksborg Palace.

His ambitions took him far beyond the borders of Denmark. Krock traveled through France in 1693 and spent significant time in Italy, returning to the peninsula again in 1699 and 1703. These travels were more than mere excursions; they allowed him to absorb the Italian baroque style, a movement that would later define his approach to history painting. During his third Italian trip, he worked within the studio of Carlo Maratta under a royal grant, an experience that refined his ability to handle large-scale compositions.

      The Court Painter

In 1706, Krock achieved a position of significant prestige when he was named royal painter to Frederick IV. This appointment, which was renewed in 1731, continued under the reign of Christian VI. His work became an essential part of the visual identity of the Danish monarchy. He was tasked with decorating the interiors of several major palaces and castles, including:

      • Frederiksberg
      • Fredensborg
      • Hirschholm
      • Rosenborg
      • Christiansborg

His output was vast, consisting of plafonds, wall panels, and door pieces. While he focused heavily on large-scale mythological and historical subjects, his studio also functioned as a center for instruction. He maintained a space behind Børsen where he taught drawing and managed an artist society. This role made him a central figure in the local artistic community, even as the tastes of the court began to shift toward the Rococo style during his later years.

      Legacy and Loss

Krock’s contribution to the Danish art scene extended into the institutional. In 1701, he was among a group of court artists who petitioned King Frederick IV for the creation of an artist society and teaching academy. This effort laid the groundwork for what would eventually become the Royal Danish Academy of Art. By 1738, Krock had been named a leader of Christian VI’s Art Academy, though his leadership was brief.

The physical record of his life's work has been subject to the whims of history and fire. Significant portions of his paintings were lost during the fires at Christiansborg in 1794 and Frederiksborg in 1859, including his work titled Dommedag. Despite these losses, pieces such as The Finding of Moses and various chalk drawings remain in collections like the Statens Museum for Kunst. He died in Copenhagen on 18 November 1738, leaving behind a period of Danish painting that had been deeply shaped by his Italian-influenced baroque hand.
