      Early Life and Family Background

Jacques Raverat was born in Paris, France, in 1885. He was the son of Georges Pierre Raverat and Helena Lorena Raverat, née Caron. His early years were shaped by this French lineage, though his path would eventually lead him toward the English landscape. He was a painter by trade.

In 1898, his schooling took him to Bedales School in Steep, Hampshire. This move from Paris to the English countryside marked a significant shift in his environment. After his time at Bedales, he moved on to Jesus College, Cambridge. These formative years in both France and England provided the backdrop for his developing eye as an artist.

      Marriage and Intellectual Circles

In 1911, he married Gwen Darwin, an English painter and wood engraver. She was the daughter of George Darwin and Lady Maud Darwin. Their shared life was woven into the social fabric of the time, moving through circles that valued a specific kind of intellectual freedom. They were active members of the Neo-Pagans, a group centered around Rupert Brooke.

The couple also moved along the fringes of the Bloomsbury Group. This connection brought them into the orbit of figures like Virginia Woolf, John Maynard Keynes, Vanessa Bell, and Lytton Strachey. These associations were not merely social; they were part of a way of living and thinking that defined their years in England and later in Vence, France.

      Later Years and Death

In 1920, the couple moved to Vence in France. Life there was shaped by the quietude of the south, though health began to intervene. Raverat lived with a form of multiple sclerosis, a condition that gradually took its toll. The physical struggle eventually led to his death on 6 March 1925, following complications from the disease.

His funeral was held at Christ Church in Cannes, France. It is believed that he may be buried there, within the grounds of the church.

Where to See the Works Today

Tracing the physical remains of his output requires looking toward specific collections that hold his traces. The Fitzwilliam Museum maintains one approved work by the artist within its holdings. This piece, titled Mountains in the Dauphiné, dated 1913, offers a glimpse into the landscapes he observed. It remains a primary point of contact for those seeking to see his hand in a museum setting.

Other fragments of his output exist in different forms. A 1912 print titled Creation of Light is held within the Whitworth's collection. Seeing these works requires visiting these particular institutions, as his presence in public galleries is concentrated in these specific locations. The works remain quiet observers of the spaces they inhabit.
