      Early Life, Family and Training

Born in Colchester, Essex, in 1730, James Dunthorne was raised within a household defined by religious conviction. He was the son of John Dunthorne, who served as a Baptist Minister at the Eld Lane chapel in Colchester. This upbringing in a nonconformist environment provided the backdrop for a life that would eventually span the diverse disciplines of portraiture, landscape painting, cartography, and topography.

His formal entry into the arts began in 1745, when he was apprenticed to Joshua Kirby. This period of training, for which he paid £25, laid the technical foundation for his later versatility. By the time he reached adulthood, his professional identity was firmly rooted in the Essex region. In 1752, he married Elizabeth Hubbard at St James, Colchester, on 3 October. The union was a central pillar of his private life, and together the couple raised nine children.

      Professional Activity in Colchester

Dunthorne’s professional life in Colchester was marked by a diverse range of technical and artistic pursuits. By 1762, he was actively seeking to expand his studio by advertising for an apprentice. His hand was frequently applied to the documentation of local history; during the 1760s and 1770s, he produced detailed drawings of historic Essex buildings and tessellated pavements. These topographical works were later reproduced in various antiquarian publications, securing his reputation as a skilled observer of the region's architectural and archaeological features.

His involvement in the civic and social fabric of the town continued well into his later years. In 1794, he was commissioned to create the brass stamp for the Colchester Castle Book Society. His standing within the community was further evidenced in 1796, when the Colchester Corporation paid him twelve guineas for his painting of the King's Arms. While he maintained a steady presence in his home region, he also sought recognition on a broader stage, exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy under the name 'John' Dunthorne, sen.
