      A life shaped by movement

Jean Crotti began his studies in Munich at the School of Decorative Arts before moving to Paris at age twenty-three to attend the Académie Julian. His early years were spent absorbing the quiet rhythms of Impressionism, followed by the bold colors of Fauvism and the flowing lines of Art Nouveau. He moved through these styles with a steady focus on how light and form could be rearranged. Around 1910, his work began to shift toward Orphism, an offshoot of Cubism that he explored alongside others in New York City.

The years of the First World War brought him to America as a refugee. In New York, he shared a studio with Marcel Duchamp and met Suzanne Duchamp. This period of his life was marked by close associations with figures like Francis Picabia. He became involved in the Dada movement, creating works that used found objects, such as Les Forces MÈcaniques de l'amour Mouvement. His work during this time often carried religious titles, even as he experimented with more mechanical and abstract forms.

In 1916, Crotti left America to return to Paris. Following a separation from his first wife, Yvonne Chastel, he married Suzanne Duchamp in 1919. Her own artistic practice left a mark on his paintings. By 1920, he had produced a portrait of Thomas Edison, and later, works like Parterre de reve showed him framing even his own painting palette as part of the art itself.

      Technique and exploration

Crotti’s hands worked with many different materials. He used oil on canvas, etching, aquatint, and lithograph to express his ideas. One specific method he developed was gemmail, a technique involving the layering of colored glass with an enamel fixative. This allowed him to play with depth and light in a way that felt physical and structured.

His later years saw him participating in major exhibitions across Europe and the United States, including the 1925 Exposition International in Paris and the International Exhibition of Modern Art at the Brooklyn Museum. His output remained varied, ranging from abstract compositions to portraits and floral subjects. He died in Paris in 1958, leaving behind a collection of papers now held by the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution.
