The Studio and the Salon
Jean-Paul Raphaël Sinibaldi began his training within the walls of the École des Beaux-Arts. He spent his early years under the guidance of Alexandre Cabanel and Alfred Stevens, learning the precise language of academic painting. By 1881, he was presenting his work at the Salon, a presence that continued through 1905. His hands moved between the structured demands of history painting and the quieter observations of genre scenes.
The years following his studies brought shifts in his focus. In 1886, he received the Prix de Rome, an honor that marked a significant moment in his development. A travel grant from the Conseil supérieur des beaux-arts in 1888 allowed him to walk through Italy, where he spent time studying the Renaissance masters. This period of travel left its mark on his approach to light and form.
Medals and Commissions
His career was marked by a steady accumulation of recognition from various exhibitions. He earned a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1889 and later received a silver medal at the 1900 exposition. These honors were accompanied by personal distinctions, such as being named a Knight in the Legion of Honor in 1900.
While much of his work found homes with private collectors, Sinibaldi also worked on public spaces. His brush touched the following locations:
- The Hôtel de Ville in Paris, where he contributed to the hall decorations.
- The wedding chapel at the town hall in Lille.
- The castle of Neuville-sur-Ain, a project undertaken through the recommendation of his father-in-law, Tony Ferret.
- An office for the Ministry of Economic Affairs, designed in 1897.
Later Years and Subjects
As time passed, the subjects of his paintings shifted. The portraits and country scenes that defined his early reputation gave way to landscape and Symbolist painting toward the end of his life. He eventually took on the responsibility of directing the Fine Arts School in Lille.
He lived much of his later life in the region of Bourg-en-Bresse. His work remains held in various collections, including the Musée Paul-Valéry and the Musée Baron-Martin. He died in Bourg-en-Bresse on January 17, 1909.
