Born in Granada, Spain, José Guerrero began his formal training at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios before moving to Madrid to study at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. His education took him to Paris, where he studied fresco painting at the École des Beaux-Arts. In the late 1950s, his palette was dominated by predominantly black, anxiety-ridden tones, but upon returning to Spain in 1965, he reintegrated purer colors into his compositions.
