The Shadow of the Master
Genoa, around 1610. A young Luca Saltarello begins his training under Domenico Fiasella. The studio is a place of heavy textures and thick paint layers. As the most accomplished pupil of Fiasella, Saltarello absorbs the weight of the Baroque style, working alongside his mentor through the late 1620s and early 1630s. His early brushwork mirrors this density, a physical manifestation of the lessons learned in the Genoese workshops.
By 1632, a singular, documented moment emerges: the creation of a large altarpiece for the Chiesa di Santo Stefano in Genoa. In this work, Saint Benedict Reviving a Fallen Worker, the artist's hand is clearly defined. It remains the primary anchor for understanding a career that otherwise remains shrouded in the difficulty of attribution. Many of his other works have been lost to history, often misidentified as the hand of Fiasella.
Flemish Inflections and the Roman Shift
A shift occurs as Saltarello moves away from the heavy, labored strokes of his teacher. The presence of the Flemish artist community in Genoa alters his trajectory. The influence of Antony van Dyck introduces a new delicacy to his technique. His style gains a newfound freedom, trading the thick impasto of his youth for lighter, more agile movements. This evolution is not merely technical; it is a change in the very language of his painting.
The chromatic range of his palette finds its roots in the presence of Jan Roos and the brothers Cornelis and Lucas de Wael. Even the landscape elements in his work carry the ghost of Jan Wildens, who had left a significant mark on the Genoese scene years prior. This intersection of Italian tradition and Flemish color defines his developing vision.
The final chapter of his life moves to Rome. From the mid-1630s until his death around 1645, he works in the shadow of the Eternal City. His life is cut short, a casualty of a slavish dedication to his craft. He leaves behind a small, fragmented body of religious compositions, a quiet legacy of a painter who sought to refine the heavy traditions of his training into something more fluid and light.
