The Geometry of Light and Shadow

Born in Amsterdam in 1901, Mark Kolthoff spent much of his life observing the way light settles on surfaces. His early years at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam were marked by a quiet friction. While his teachers pushed for the weight of monumental painting, he found himself drawn to the sharp edges of Cubism. This preference for the avant-garde created a distance between him and the traditionalist expectations of his instructors. He sought a different way to see, one that relied on the play of diagonals and the graphic impact of shadow.

In the 1930s, his eyes moved between the canvas and the lens. He turned to photography, finding in it a way to resolve the visual problems that had troubled his paintings. Through the camera, he explored how light and shadow could structure a scene, a habit that stayed with him even when he returned to oil on canvas. By 1933, the camera became a secondary tool, a way to sharpen his perception rather than a replacement for the brush. His work during this period remained a personal way of depicting reality through a cubist lens.

      The Shift Toward Abstraction

The year 1945 marked a change in how he organized his compositions. The personal, cubist approach he had used to interpret the world gave way to a more geometric abstraction. He moved away from the recognizable shapes of the landscape or the still life and toward a language of pure form. This transition was not a sudden break but a steady movement toward the essence of structure.

His involvement with various artistic groups defined his place in the Dutch art scene during the mid-century:

      • Vrije Beelden: Joined in 1947, a group that championed experimental and abstract art against traditional figurative styles.
      • Creatie: A member in 1950 following the split of his previous group.
      • Liga Nieuwe Beelden: A member until 1967, continuing his commitment to new visual languages.

A Life of Observation and Teaching

Beyond the studio, Kolthoff spent years as a teacher at the Institute for Applied Arts Education in Amsterdam. He passed on his technical understanding of form and light to others, even as he continued to refine his own practice. His work, such as Polder en waterland and his various compositions, shows a preoccupation with how space is divided and held. Even his still lifes, like the one featuring a glass and books from 1943, carry the weight of his interest in how objects occupy a room.

He remained in Amsterdam until his death in 1993. While he viewed himself primarily as a painter, the photographic work he produced in the 1930s eventually gained a second life, recognized for its ability to capture the structural truth of a moment. His legacy is found in the quiet, disciplined way he dismantled and rebuilt the world through geometry.
