A Life Between Rome and Sicily
Matteo Desiderato began his life in Sciacca, a town in the province of Agrigento. His early years remain somewhat obscured by time, but his path eventually led him to the bustling workshops of Rome. It was there, under the guidance of Mariano Rossi, that he learned the foundations of his craft. This period in Rome was more than just an apprenticeship; it was a chapter of personal change. During his long stay in the capital, he married a woman from the Sicilian minor nobility and began a family, welcoming a daughter into his life.
Despite the connections he made in Rome, the pull of his homeland remained strong. Desiderato eventually left his wife and child to return to Sicily, settling permanently in Catania. This move marked a transition from a student in a great metropolitan center to an established figure in his own region. He spent the remainder of his days in Catania, though his influence spread through the surrounding towns, leaving his mark on the churches and palaces of the Sicilian landscape.
The Brush and the Altar
Much of Desiderato's work was born from the needs of the Church and the local nobility. His hands were often busy with religious commissions, creating altarpieces that populated the sanctuaries of Catania, Acireale, and many surrounding villages. He had a particular affinity for depicting saints and sacred scenes, such as his various depictions of San Domenico. In these works, one can observe a recurring presence: a small bracchetto dog, which he painted with varying degrees of anatomical detail across different decades.
His output was not limited to the spiritual. In the halls of Palazzo Biscari, he worked alongside Sebastiano Lo Monaco to decorate grand spaces with frescoes, including scenes like the Convito degli dei and the Gloria della famiglia Biscari. He also painted intimate portraits of children in an oval format, capturing the fashion and character of the era. His ability to move between the large-scale demands of fresco work and the delicate nature of oil on canvas allowed him to serve a wide range of patrons.
A Legacy of Instruction
Beyond his own individual paintings, Desiderato contributed to the continuity of Sicilian painting by establishing a school of his own. He acted as a teacher to several artists who would go on to carry his techniques forward into the next generation. His students included:
- Giuseppe Gandolfo
- Giuseppe Rapisardi
- Luigi Montalto
- Sebastiano Lo Monaco
- Antonio Pennisi
Through these pupils, the lessons learned in the workshop of Mariano Rossi and refined in the churches of Sicily were preserved. His life, which ended in Catania in 1827, left behind a collection of works that remain part of the local identity, found still in the crypts, basilicas, and museums of the region.
