      The Architecture of Presence

Born in Tel Aviv in 1957, Michal Rovner Hammer has spent her career navigating the blurred lines between the seen and the felt. Her early academic pursuits at Tel Aviv University in cinema, television, and philosophy provided a foundation for an artistic practice that refuses to be confined by a single medium. In 1978, she co-founded the Camera Obscura School of Art, a significant venture for photography in her home city. This period of institutional building preceded her move to New York in 1987, a transition that would eventually see her work spanning continents and disciplines.

Her technical evolution is marked by a deliberate manipulation of reality. In the early 1990s, she worked alongside director Robert Frank on films such as One Hour-C’est Vrai and Last Supper. During this era, her photographic series began to exhibit a characteristic distortion. In Outside (1990–91), she transformed images of Bedouin huts in the Israeli desert through repetitive printing and resizing, creating spectral, shifting structures. This tendency toward abstraction continued in the Decoy series, where radar and surveillance imagery was altered to present indistinct groups of people, and in One-Person Game Against Nature, which used distorted photographs of figures in the Dead Sea.

The Geometry of Conflict and Connection

Rovner Hammer’s work often addresses the tension inherent in borders and boundaries. Her 1996–97 video Border utilized the military access road between Israel and Lebanon as a site to explore political and psychological demarcations. This period also saw her creating installations situated directly on electric fences and guard towers along the Israel-Lebanon border. These works did not seek to provide direct political commentary but rather to present situations of fracture and vulnerability.

As her practice matured, she began integrating digital technology with more tactile elements. She has frequently merged photography, video, and digital art into a single, cohesive language. In the Monoprints of Birds (1998), she utilized anonymous crowds or animals to explore mass movement. Her later works often feature figures that have lost their individual contours, becoming part of larger, more abstract patterns. This is evident in Mechanism (2018), where tiny human figures rotate like cogs within a large system, suggesting the way individuals become integrated into broader technological or social structures.

      Recognition and Permanent Records

The reach of her work extends to some of the most significant institutions globally. Her exhibitions have been hosted at the Louvre, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Stedelijk Museum. She represented Israel at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003, a moment that highlighted her ability to transform exhibition spaces through scale and projection. Her use of stone as a medium, particularly in the In Stone exhibition, allowed her to project images onto ancient tablets, merging the digital with the geological.

Her contributions to the plastic arts have been recognized with several high honors, including the Israel Prize in 2023 and the title of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Her work is held in permanent collections that include:
