The weight of the everyday
Minerva Cuevas grew up in the historic center of Mexico City, a place where the layers of political struggle and social reality are visible on every corner. Her early years were spent observing the friction of urban life, an experience that later informed her focus on how economic systems move through the streets. She studied at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, graduating in 1997. This academic foundation provided the tools for a practice that does not rely on traditional canvas or sculpture, but instead looks toward the structures of capitalism and the ways they can be quietly disrupted.
Her work often takes the form of interventions that inhabit the spaces we already use. She uses video, photography, and installation to look closely at how value and property are managed in society. In one notable project, Del Montte—Bananeras, she took a familiar corporate logo and modified it to tell a story of tension between transnational companies and Latin American countries like Guatemala. By altering the branding, she brought attention to the exploitation of natural resources and the political figures involved in those histories.
Structures of resistance
In 1998, Cuevas began a long-term project called Mejor Vida Corp. This venture functions as a mix between a pseudo-corporation and a non-profit organization. It operates through a website that provides small, practical services intended to slip into the cracks of the existing economy. These acts are modest but specific:
- The provision of special bar codes designed to lower the cost of food in supermarkets.
- The creation of personalized, fake student identification cards.
- The offering of free phone calls.
These interventions are not meant to be grand gestures. Instead, they are small disruptions that use the language of commerce—barcodes, logos, and corporate identities—to question how much control we have over our own economic lives. She also joined irational.org in 1999, a collaborative platform used to foster intellectual discourse and challenge conventional perspectives.
A practice of research and presence
The artist’s method is rooted in deep research into the notions of exchange and ownership. Her work often moves between different media, including muralism and performance, to find where an idea can most effectively land. In her five-channel video installation, The Economy of the Imaginary: Pirates and Heroes (2006), she used the aesthetics of comic books and Lucha Libre wrestling to engage with discussions about the American film industry.
Her presence in the international art scene is marked by exhibitions in various cities, from Berlin and Paris to London and New York. In 2016, she established the International Understanding Foundation to promote intercultural dialogue. Whether through a site-specific public intervention or a digital service, her work remains focused on the possibility of finding ways to subvert the political and economic structures that shape our daily existence.
